They found a dead rat in the parlament and they did a big test on it to see if it had the plague but it didnt. So kitty talks about how lots of the families in her street have to sleep in one of the school halls. She gets a letter from bertie telling her about the war and how theres lots of men geting sick and they have to put down their horses because they are starving and have been drinking from dirty streams.

They have read the papper and it said the plague is getting closer to their city.Her mum makes them have a bath to get clean.her dad has said that in the paper there are some medicines they can take that goes into their blood to try and prevent them from catching the disease but her mum says she hasnt had to take and medicines before and shes not going to start now!
